Frequently Asked Questions
| | Q | If I take down my asbestos shed or garage myself how do I do it safely? | | A |
Providing you are dealing with bonded asbestos cement sheeting
products you should wet the shed or garage cladding sheets with a
hose pipe. Wear a P3 dust mask (paper mask) and take down big
pieces and place on a trailer. Bag up smaller piece in a heavy
duty polythene bag placed inside another polythene bag (double
bagged).
| | Q | Is asbestos dangerous and what do the colours of asbestos mean? | | A |
Asbestos fibres are dangerous when released into the air. Many
older building products and insulations have asbestos based
materials in them. The colours denote the different types of
asbestos, but this can only be distiguished under the microscope
and thereby establish what type of asbestos is contained in the
material.
| | Q | I have worked with asbestos for years, what is all the fuss about? | | A |
Asbestos can have differing effects on different people. A level
of exposure which leads to the death of one person could have
little effect on another person. Providing asbestos fibres are not
released or the correct control procedures are followed, it is
possible to work with asbestos quite safely.
| | Q | Where can I dispose of bonded asbestos cement sheeting and how much does it cost? | | A |
You can take bonded asbestos to the Council's tipping site situated
on Estuary Way, off Gilbey Road in Grimsby on a Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday or Friday between 8.30a.m. and 3.30p.m. The site is also
open on Saturdays from 8.30a.m. until 12.30p.m. (but they
are usually very busy and should really be avoided if
possible). This service is available to residents of
North East Lincolnshire only.
| | Q | Can the Council come and take down my asbestos shed or garage? | | A |
No. We are not licensed to remove asbestos, but if you need advice
contact the Architectural Consultancy at North East Lincolnshire
Council and ask to speak to the Asbestos Surveyor.
| | Q | Is there any company that will come and take away asbestos and how much will it cost? | | A |
There are a few contractors locally who will be able to help you.
If you cannot find anyone call Architectural Consultancy on the
number above.
| | Q | What do I do when I find fly tipped asbestos? | | A |
Please contact the Architectural Consultancy and ask to speak to
the Asbestos Surveyor, for advice.
Please be aware that fly tipped asbestos costs the Council a lot
of money each year to clear away. It is also a criminal office and
seriously contaminates the environment. If you see anyone doing
so, please report it to the police.
