Enlargement
Since May 2004 the number of members increased from 15 to 25 in the largest single enlargement process since the founding of the ECSC (European Coal & Steel Community) over 50 years ago. The new members come from 3 regions of Europe - the Balkans, the Mediterranean & Eastern Europe (Countries mainly with boundaries on the former Soviet Union including the Baltic countries) Their accession from May 1st made a lot more information available. During 2007 Bulgaria and Romania are due to join and Croatia and Turkey are negotiating membership at a future date.
