The Architectural Consultancy provides specialist services through its Asbestos Officer to specify, tender, contract and supervise a wide range of asbestos removal and disposal works where required on any of the Council's Property Portfolio premises. In addition, advice and guidance is given to members of the public regarding their options/alternatives when faced with the need to remove or dispose of asbestos materials.
The Architectural Consultancy undertakes Asbestos Surveys on behalf of the Council through a specialist Asbestos Officer following guidance issued by the Health and Safety Executive and satisfying all associated legislation. Surveys are also undertaken to incorporate into the Education and Corporate Asset Management Plans. Results of surveys are recorded in a standard report format and within the Council's Asset Management Database.
Part of the Architectural Consultancy's work in the management and control of asbestos is the sampling and analysis (testing) of suspect materials. The Consultancy's Asbestos Officer takes samples of materials under controlled conditions and submits them for detailed analysis to UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited laboratories who undertake optical fibre counting to establish the presence of asbestos. Results of analysis help determine any remedial action necessary.
The Consultancy also works closely with colleagues in Human Resources and Environmental Services/Building Control and Environmental Control on asbestos issues.
