Information about land and property ownership

The management of the council's land and property information is the responsibility of the Property Data Unit within the Asset Management section. The council's record of land and property holdings is called the Land Terrier.

This information is held on a digitised mapping system and linked database, and provides details of all council acquisitions, disposals, leases, lettings, licences, easements and rights of way.

We are able to identify council land provided the precise location of the land or property concerned can be accurately described.  A sketched plan of the location in question can be useful.  We can also advise which council department is responsible for the land or property and, where possible, give a contact name of someone in that department.

Response times are dependent upon demand and also upon the possible need for a detailed plan to be submitted to us.  Provided all necessary details have been given to us a telephone response can normally be given within one working day.  In certain cases, depending on the complexity of land ownership in the area, reference to the council's deeds may be required in which case the enquiry may take longer.

To find out about council land and property ownership please refer to the contact details or complete the Council Land and Property Enquiry form to the right of this page.

It is possible for the public to view the council's maps, however an appointment would need to be made.  Please use the contact details as the top of this page.  There is no charge for this service.  However if you require information from the Land Registry they will make a charge.

Ownership of land and property not owned by the council may be traced via the Land Registry by telephoning 0844 892 1111 or via the link to the right of this page.
