CONGRATULATIONS ON THE BIRTH OF YOUR BABY!

A Baby's birth must be registered, by law, within 42 days of the baby's arrival, and registered within the district where the birth occurred.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR UNMARRIED COUPLES - Parental Responsibility - Please read the link to this page before contacting the Register Office to make an appointment to register the birth of your child.

WHO CAN REGISTER A BABY'S BIRTH?

If the natural mother and natural father of the child were married to each other at the time of the birth, either parent may attend to register.

If the natural mother and natural father are not married to each other at the time of the baby's birth but wish to record both parent's details then both parents must attend.

Baby's natural mother, if not married to the father, may register the birth alone but she will not be able to record the father's details unless a Statutory Declaration* or relevant Court Order* is produced.

* Telephone the Registrar for advice on 01472 324861

WHAT IS NEEDED TO REGISTER A BIRTH?

The following information is required:

  • Baby's date and place of birth, forenames and surname.
  • Mother's full name, date and place of birth, current or last occupation, if applicable, maiden surname, and date of marriage.
  • The National Health Service number issued by the Maternity Hospital in which the baby was born. If the birth is a home birth the Community Midwife should be able to issue this number.

The details recorded for the father will be his full name, date and place of birth and his current or last occupation.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES: WHAT DO PARENTS RECEIVE?

The Registrar will issue a free 'short' birth certificate showing the baby's name, sex and date of birth.

A pink form will also be provided for the baby to be registered with a General Practitioner. This form will show the baby's National Health Service Number.

A 'standard' birth certificate may also be obtained once the registration has been completed. This certificate will show all the details that have been recorded in the Register. There is a fee of £3.50 charged for this certificate, if requested at the time of the registration. If you require a passport for your baby it is necessary to obtain the standard certificate.  The standard certificate is available at a later date but the fee increases to £7.00 once the Register has been completed - approximately 1 month after registration.
