Interesting Facts about Grimsby Crematorium
- Following a public enquiry in April 1950, it was decided that Grimsby needed a Crematorium. In September of 1952 consent was given to the Council to commence building work. Work actually began in October of 1952 and was completed by July 1954.
- The Lord Bishop of Lincoln dedicated the building and the Gardens of Remembrance on Wednesday 21st July 1954.
- The first funeral service and cremation took place on 5th August 1954.
- The cost of the first cremation was £6.00.
- During the first year 293 cremations were conducted.
- In the present day, on average there are 1800 funeral services held each year at the Crematorium
- A total of 87,018 cremations have taken place since the opening of the Crematorium Building in 1954 to end of 2007/08.
- The cost for a cremation in 2007 is £360.00 (for a resident of North East Lincolnshire).
- The Crematorium is set in nine acres of grounds.
- North East Lincolnshire Council employ nine staff to work within the Crematorium. One full time Registrar/Manager, one full time Deputy Cemeteries & Crematorium Registrar, four full time Crematorium Technicians/Chapel Attendants, two part time administrative staff and one weekend attendant.
- The Grounds Maintenance Section of North East Lincolnshire Council performs the majority of the work within the Gardens of Remembrance.
- A proportion of the Chapel Attendants work time is also spent caring for the grounds.
- Grimsby Crematorium is a member of the Federation of British Cremation Authorities and adheres to their Code of Cremation Practice.
