Historical Searches

Once a burial has taken place the details are entered in a Register of Burials. These registers are required to be kept by law, and are preserved forever.
The register contains the following details:
- Burial number (numbered consecutively for each cemetery)
- Name of deceased
- Address
- Age at death
- Date of burial
- Date of death
- Section and grave number, whether purchased or unpurchased grave and any other particulars worth noting (sometimes depth of grave, whether cremated remains etc).
Records for burials, within Scartho Road Cemetery before June 1970, are kept at the Grimsby Archives Office, Grimsby Town Hall, Tel: 01472 323582 / 323581. Burial records after June 1970 to present day are held at the Grimsby Cemeteries and Crematorium Office. All burials records for Cleethorpes Cemetery are held at the Grimsby Cemeteries and Crematorium Office.
It is relatively easy to locate an entry in a Register of Burials if the surname and Christian names are known, and the approximate year of death. Using the information in the register, the relevant ground plan is located and this is used to find the grave on site.
It should be noted that not all graves have a memorial set upon them, and whilst it is still possible to locate the grave, sometimes the plot will be bare with no marker.
If you have obtained a grave number and section number and established that there is a memorial on it, you may be able to locate it yourself by using a cemetery plan, please contact the Grimsby Cemeteries and Crematorium Office for a copy.
Records relating to cremations at Grimsby's Crematorium are partly computerised and enquiries can be quickly answered by contacting the Grimsby Cemeteries and Crematorium Office. It is not possible to conduct searches electronically on-line at the present time.
The Cremation Registers contain the following information:
- Cremation number
- Name and address of deceased
- Age at death
- Date of death
- Date of cremation
- Name and address of the applicant for cremation
Please Note: We are not able to issue information relating to living persons (next of kin etc) without their prior permission.
Members of the public are allowed, by the Local Authorities' Cemeteries Order 1977, to search only in the Burial Registers. This can be done during normal opening hours at the Grimsby Cemeteries and Crematorium Office. A charge is made for this service. This is currently (April 2007) £5.00 per search. Please check the cost before applying with the Grimsby Cemeteries and Crematorium Office.
