| Whenever possible your event should be held in a park, sports ground, or on country footpaths away from the road. Plan the route away from roads wherever possible.
Do not use roads without proper footpaths or verges, and do not use roads where there are roadworks taking place.
In some instances, where events are to be held on the public highway, and the necessity for a road closure or traffic diversion signs arises, the organiser must contact the Traffic Department, six weeks in advance of the proposed public event, to obtain the necessary Traffic Regulation Order.
Any temporary directional signs erected on the highway will need to be approved by the Highways Department at the Council.
Traffic direction on the public highway can only be undertaken by police officers or traffic wardens. It is illegal - and dangerous - for others to direct traffic on the road.
If there are any last minute changes to a route ensure that both the Police and the Local Authority are informed and are satisfied that suitable safety measures are in place.
Traffic direction on private land within the site can be undertaken by anyone, but persons under 18 years of age should not be used. All traffic controllers on a site should wear a brightly coloured reflective tabard for both identification and safety purposes. |
