An Historical Journey
Grimsby's first Royal Charter was granted in 1201 by King John. The neighbouring councils of Cleethorpes Urban District and Grimsby Rural District were established in 1894. Cleethorpes Urban District received a Royal Charter and became a borough in 1936. In 1974 the Rural and Urban District were amalgamated to form Cleethorpes District Council, which received Borough status in the following year from Queen Elizabeth II. Finally, in 1996 Cleethorpes and Grimsby Boroughs joined to form a new authority named ‘North East Lincolnshire’.
