Instrumental and vocal teaching is provided by accredited self-employed teachers who deliver tuition to schools. In addition to individual and small group lessons many of them take part in the Wider Opportunities Programmes, a government initiative "to ensure that over time all primary pupils who want to should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument." These lessons are given in partnership with the class teachers and provide basic skills for music making and elementary instrumental techniques. They target whole classes/year groups, use a variety of instruments and are both complementary and additional to National Curriculum Music.
The Service also manages schemes to encourage children to play together in ensembles including;

The Service organises workshops and projects for schools, youth groups and the community, encouraging active engagement with a variety of world music experiences. Annual singing festivals for infant, primary and secondary schools actively encourage and enhance singing in our schools and provide an introduction to world music and culture. African drumming, Steel pans, Samba and Indonesian Gamelan workshops are held regularly and provide a rich diversity of curriculum enhancement. Pupils learning under the Wider Opportunities programme have the opportunity to take part in sharing days with other schools. Curriculum advice and support is available as an ongoing service to schools of all key stages.
In addition, the service provides a comprehensive range of Performing Arts activities which are also available to schools, youth groups and the community. Projects featuring Dance, Drama, Visual Arts and new technology are delivered by both local and regional artists. Regular liaison with the Arts Development Team, the Regional Arts Board and Youth Music provides opportunities for pupils, teachers and community arts workers to develop their skills and experiences.
The service is located on the Whitgift School campus where an expanded team is based and where a resource centre provides training, workshops and resources to assist teachers in the delivery of the music and performing arts. Although attached to the main school building, access is via a separate gate, clearly marked by the "Music and Performing Arts Service" signage.
