What does the SACRE do?
Since 1988 local authorities have had a duty to establish a Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE). Religious education is a statutory part of the basic curriculum for all pupils, but it is not a National Curriculum subject. Instead it is a responsibility of the Local Authority (LA) through its SACRE.
The SACRE advises the LA on matters relating to collective worship in community schools and on religious education given in accordance with the locally agreed syllabus.
The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, revised in 2011 by North East Lincolnshire and it partner authoritied is available on the links below:
The SACRE monitors the effectiveness and appropriateness of the agreed syllabus, which is formally reviewed every five years.
SACRE also publishes support materials, approves a programme of training for teachers and sponsors or supports other projects which it deems to be consistent with its responsibility to promote religious education and spiritual, moral, social and cultural education in schools.
Each year, the NE Lincolnshire SACRE submits a report of its activities which will be published on this site from December 2012.
Further information about the work of the SACRE can be obtained from the website of NASACRE – the National Association of SACREs
From September 2011, Serco has taken on the role of supporting the local SACRE in the discharge of its duties as part of its School Improvement contract with the local authority. This includes the provision of "expert subject advice".
