Neighbourhood Study

East Marsh was selected as the area to be reviewed by inspectors' for the neighbourhood study.

The neighbourhood study was undertaken during the first three days of the on-site inspection in January 2007.  Inspectors engaged in a range of activities in that area which included:

  • Listening to the views of children, young people and their parents/carers
  • Discussions with front-line staff, including teachers, social workers, community workers, youth workers, police and health professionals
  • Visits to schools, youth and community centres, health centres and co-located services, such as children's centres or SureStart local programmes.

The Inspectors looked at how local services contributed to improving outcomes for children and young people and how local services work together.

  • The percentage of children and young people is in line with the average for the area (27%)
  • Indicators of economic, social, cultural and health disadvantage are above average for the area
  • Initiatives are underway to improve outcomes for children and young people
  • There are examples of co-ordinated working between agencies such as SureStart, health and child care providers.

In preparation for the neighbourhood study we compiled a detailed study guide outlining the full range of activities and services within East Marsh a copy is available here.

A group of children and young people who live in East Marsh volunteered to take part in the study and are worked hard to prepare for this. Some were involved in making a film about what life is like in East Marsh and others  produced art work and other materials which they gave to inspector's to show what matters to them in the area.  Two focus groups were run with young people from the area which explored some of the issues around living in East Marsh and how the Council could help to make them feel safer.
