Different Types of School
There are four types of mainstream state schools in England and Wales:
- Community
- Foundation
- Voluntary aided
- Voluntary controlled
Schools of all four types have a lot in common: they are self managing and do not charge fees. They work in partnership with other schools and local councils and they receive funding from the local council. Each type of school also has its own characteristics:
Community schools
Community schools within North East Lincolnshire include:
- The Hereford Technology School
- The Humberston School
- The Lindsey School and Community Arts College
- Whitgift School
The Council employs the school’s staff on behalf of the governing body, owns the school’s land and buildings and is the admissions authority. The Council has primary responsibility for deciding the arrangements for admitting pupils to the schools.

We are responsible for admissions to community and voluntary controlled schools. The governing body is responsible for admission to voluntary aided schools, academies and foundation schools. However, at the stage of transferring from primary to secondary school we co-ordinate all the admissions on behalf of the governing bodies concerned.

Academies
In addition to the four types of state schools there is a further category of publicly funded independent schools which also provide free education. One example of this is Academies. There are currently three Academies in North East Lincolnshire which opened in September 2007: Havelock Academy, Oasis Academy Immingham, Oasis Academy Wintringham.
