Introduction
Instrumental teaching is provided by local self-employed teachers who contract to deliver tuition to schools. In addition to individual and small group lessons many of them take part in the Wider Opportunities Programmes; a government initiative to ensure that over time all primary pupils who want to, should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.' These lessons are given in partnership with the class teachers and provide basic skills for music making and elementary instrumental techniques. They target whole classes/year groups, use a variety of instruments and are both complementary and additional to National Curriculum Music.
The Service also manages schemes to encourage children to learn instruments which are traditionally hard to access, including a 'Big Brass' project, and provides opportunities for pupils to both hire and purchase quality instruments for their studies. Opportunities for out of school ensemble playing include Big Brass and Playing Around (an opportunity for beginner string players to have fun making music) on each Wednesday during term time at Lisle Marsden School and Steel the Rhythm (steel pans tuition/bands) on Thursdays at Lindsey Upper School. The Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Youth Orchestra also provides playing opportunities on all orchestral and band instruments through various sections for all ages and abilities held at Lisle Marsden School on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
The Service organises workshops and projects for schools, youth groups and the community, encouraging active engagement with a variety of world music experiences. Annual singing festivals for infant, primary and secondary schools actively encourage and enhance singing in our schools and provide an introduction to world music and culture. African drumming, Steel pans, Samba and Indonesian Gamelan workshops are held regularly and provide a rich diversity of curriculum enhancement. Curriculum advice and support is available as an ongoing service to schools of all key stages.
In addition the service provides a comprehensive range of Performing Arts activities which are also available to schools, youth groups and the community. Projects featuring Dance, Drama, Visual Arts and new technology are delivered by both local and regional artists. Regular liaison with the Arts Development Team, the Regional Arts Board and Youth Music provides opportunities for pupils, teachers and community arts workers to develop their skills and experiences.
The service has been relocated to 76B Cleethorpe Road (next door to the Grimsby Evening Telegraph) where an expanded team will be based and where a resource centre will be established to provide resources to assist teachers in their delivery of the arts curriculum.
