Musical Instrument Purchase Scheme

Children not only benefit educationally but also gain a lot of pleasure from learning a musical instrument and many parents/guardians wish their children to have lessons.  It is now possible to have wider access to instrumental lessons in schools due to recent changes in funding arrangements.  Interest has increased in instrumental lessons, even though many parents are now required to contribute towards their costs.  Many parents/guardians are pleased to support their children by purchasing an instrument.  To make this process easier the North East Lincolnshire Music & Performing Arts Service has developed the "Musical Instrument Purchase Scheme"- MIPS.

The scheme recommends a carefully selected range of instruments.  These are available to purchase in full or over a 12-month period (a 24-month period is applicable for instruments where the amount payable is over £500). To order an instrument a 10% non-returnable deposit or payment in full is required.  The monthly payments will commence approximately one month after the instrument has been supplied.  Under this scheme VAT is not payable and the Music & Performing Arts Service is also able to pass on generous discounts it has negotiated from approved suppliers.  A small administration fee of 10% (5% for instruments over £500) of the discounted price is added to the cost of the instrument but the total price still represents a saving of up to a third on the full retail price.

To qualify for the scheme you must be able to answer "Yes" to the following questions -

  • Does the pupil attend a North East Lincolnshire School?
  • Will the terms of the agreement be completed before the pupil leaves the North East Lincolnshire School?
  • Will the pupil be receiving lessons on a regular basis from an approved teacher for the period of the agreement?
  • As a matter of course lessons should take place within the school day on North East Lincolnshire premises.

Conditions:

  • All instruments are supplied subject to the manufacturer's twelve-month guarantee. This does not cover faults which develop due to wear and tear or consumable parts of the instrument such as strings or reeds.
  • The scheme does not include insurance cover.  Parents are advised to ensure that instruments are covered under their own insurance arrangements. Details of approved schemes for the insurance of musical instruments are available from approved teachers.
  • All instruments are supplied brand new as complete outfits including cases and required accessories.  String instruments are checked and set up by an approved local string repairer before supply.
  • Instruments may not be resold during the agreement period.
  • Failure to comply with any of these conditions at any time during the agreement means that the discounted cost of the instrument (together with the administrative charge) plus the Value Added Tax becomes immediately due.

If you are interested in providing a musical instrument for your son/daughter please discuss this initially with your child's teacher.  They will provide advice on the most suitable instrument in terms of size and other factors.  Sheets detailing the payments for various instruments and an application/order form are available below:
