The Nottingham Declaration
The Nottingham Declaration is a voluntary commitment by Local Authorities to address the issues of climate change. The declaration was launched in October 2000 and again in November 2005 when 200 leaders of UK local governments attended a National Councils Climate Conference looking at what had been achieved and what still needed to be done to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050.
As well as signing the Nottingham Declaration showing our intent to take action of climate change, North East Lincolnshire Council has developed an Environmental Action Plan (link over this) which sets out targets to reduce the council's carbon footprint over the next 2 years. This includes increasing spending on Environmental projects, reducing carbon dioxide emissions from council operations, reducing the energy consumed by council occupied buildings, increasing the proportion of energy generated by renewable sources, and to reduce the volume of water consumed by council buildings and services.
North East Lincolnshire Council is also working in conjunction with the Carbon Trust (link over this) through the Local Authorities Carbon Management Program to help meet the targets set in the Environmental action plan. The Carbon Trust provides help and support and the focus of the work is on reducing the emissions under control of the Local Authority including buildings, vehicle fleets, street lighting and landfill sites. As part of this work North East Lincolnshire Council will be calculating its own Carbon Footprint in order to set targets to reduce it, this work should be completed by 2010.
