The Environmental Health Service is responsible for protecting the Health and Safety and Welfare of residents, workers and visitors to the area in a variety of ways. We are responsible for:

• Pollution Control - including noise, air, water, odours and dust pollution as well as contaminated land.
• Food Safety - including hygiene standards in food premises and contamination or deterioration in food products.
• Health and Safety Enforcement - for those premises where the Health and Safety Executive are not responsible.
• Port Health - including imported food inspection and conditions on board ships.
• Infectious Diseases - includes investigating infectious disease outbreaks.
• Licensing - including public entertainment, cinema's, sex shops, street collections, street trading, hackney carriages, private hire vehicles and many others.
• Animal Welfare - this section covers primarily stray dogs and the pest control service.
• Noise, Smell, Fumes, Smoke and General Nuisances Advice

The Enforcement Policy contains the Council's statement of policy in respect of all forms of enforcement, legislative or otherwise, carried out by council officers and the framework upon which any action should be based.
