Port Health

The ports of Grimsby and Immingham are together designated as a Border Inspection Post (BIP) and as such form a gateway for goods entering the European Union (EU) for the first time. All food from non E.U. countries must be checked before it is allowed entry. In addition the vessels arriving from all over the world with whatever cargo are checked to ensure freedom from pests and disease and for hygienic conditions of the crews/passengers quarters.
Purpose of the Service
- The examination and release into the E.U. of products of animal origin and other food stuffs.
- The detention, destruction, re-exportation or other treatment of unsatisfactory products of animal origin and other food stuffs.
- The processing of import and movement documents associated with products of animal origin.
The inspection of vessels to ensure:
- The absence of disease among the crew.
- The suitability of crew accommodation.
- The absence of any pest infestations.
- The presence of a current derattification or exemption certificate.
- The suitability of foodstuffs and water supply for crews.
- The provision on request of deratting and deratting exemption certificates.
- The investigation, supervision and liaison with other bodies on reports of illness and death on board any visiting vessels.
Liaise with the Environmental Control section to ensure:
- The monitoring and control of emissions of smoke from vessels.
- The monitoring and control of nuisances arising from the handling of dusty and noxious cargoes.
- The monitoring and control of excessive noise resulting from the operations of the ports of Grimsby and Immingham.
- The monitoring and enforcement of the quality of drinking water provided to vessels in the port of Grimsby and Immingham.
