Supplementary Planning Documents
Where prepared, Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs) should
be included in the Local Development Framework and will form part
of the planning framework for the area. SPDs may cover a
range of issues, both thematic and site specific, which may expand
policy or provide further detail to policies in a development plan
document. They must not however, be used to allocate
land.
They will not be subject to independent examination and will not
form part of the statutory development plan. However, they
should be subjected to rigorous procedures of community
involvement.
As part of their preparation process SPDs must undergo a
Sustainability Appraisal, this may already have been met by the SA
for the Development Plan Document to which the SPD conforms.
However, where the supplementary document is developing the policy
further or in greater detail, it will be necessary to undertake
sustainability appraisal of those matters.
