A-Z Waste Minimisation

A
Aerosols
Please dispose of aerosol cans in your green household waste bin as currently they cannot be recycled in North East Lincolnshire.
We do not have the facility to recycle these in North East Lincolnshire as all cans are compressed into blocks at our bulking facility prior to transport to the reprocessors
If aerosol cans were included this compression would represent an explosion / fire hazard because aerosols are pressurised and flammable.
Aluminium
All food and drink cans, including pet food cans, can be placed in your ORANGE box.
If you live in a flat or group dwelling you can place all cans into the CAN container at your mini recycling site.
Cans can also be recycled at the communal bring sites located across North East Lincolnshire.
To find your nearest bring site call our Waste Hotline on 01472 325 841.
B
Bricks and Building Material
Bricks and building material cannot be included in household or garden waste bins. If any is found your bin will not be emptied. This is essential to avoid damage to our collection vehicles.
This waste can be taken in small quantities at either the Grimsby or Immingham CRC site providing that it dose not amount to more that a boot full or 4 black sacks.
We cannot accept building waste delivered via van or trailer. If you have a significant amount of such waste hiring a skip from a local company would be a better option.
The limit on the amount of waste that can be accepted is due to the misuse of the facility by trade companies.
Bulky Waste
North East Lincolnshire currently offers a 'Bulky Waste' and 'White Goods' collection service.
For a fee of £20 we will collect up to five items from the front of your property - collections can be made from all of North East Lincolnshire and usually take place on Saturday morning.
A full list of exactly what items can and cannot be collected is detailed on the council website.
To book a collection call our waste hotline on 01472 325841.
If possible to transport these items yourself to either one of our community recycling sites free of charge providing that the items are from your household and the result of trade..
C
Christmas Cards
Every year 200 000 (two-hundred thousand) trees are felled to produce 1 700 000 000 (1.7 billion) Christmas cards in the UK.
Every year, to help prevent all this card going to waste, five high street stores set up collection points where old cards can be recycled. They are: Tesco, W.H.Smith, TKMaxx, Sainsbury and Marks & Spencer.
We must request however, that cards not be placed in your garden waste bin. This is because some of the materials used for decoration such as plastic, foil and glitter can disrupt the garden waste composting process.
Another option for reducing the waste impact of your Christmas cards are to re-use them as gift tags or to send some electronic 'e-cards' instead.
Christmas Trees
Around eight million Christmas trees are bought each year in the UK and the majority are sent to landfill where they take up valuable space.
However, in North East Lincolnshire you can leave your Christmas tree out for collection next to your brown garden waste bin. It will be then sent for composting alongside the rest of your garden waste.
If you do not currently have a garden waste service then you can call our waste hotline and arrange to leave your tree out for a special collection from the front of your property.
You can also take your tree to either of the council's CRC sites in Estuary Way, Grimsby and Queens Road in Immingham.
Please note: This applies to real Christmas trees only.
Composting
Up to a third of domestic waste thrown away by a typical household consists of organic matter suitable for home composting.
Grass, fruit, vegetable peel, teabags, eggshells, paper, cardboard and many more items can all be diverted from household waste bins, and transformed into compost.
It is important to note that cooked food and raw meat should not be composted as they can attract pests to the composter container.
The 'composting containers' - large plastic tubs - required for this are subsidised for local residents by North East Lincolnshire Council.
A subsidised home composter can be bought through Straight PLC. Visit www.nel.getcomposting.com or Tel: 0845 130 60 90
Carrier Bags
Last year 13 billion carrier bags were distributed in the UK - around 220 for every person! The vast majority are only used once then thrown away and buried in landfill sites.
Try and reduce your consumption of disposable plastic bags. Consider purchasing heavy duty plastic bags or, even better, natural fibre ones made from materials such as cotton and jute instead. These can be used over and over again.
Try and re-use disposable plastic bags by taking them with you next time you go shopping. Some supermarkets even offer reward points for doing this and many have introduced recycling banks at the entrance to the store for carrier bag recycling.
Cans
All food and drink cans, including pet food cans, can be placed in your ORANGE box.
If you live in a flat or group dwelling you can place all cans into the CAN container at your mini recycling site.
Cans can also be recycled at the communal bring sites located across North East Lincolnshire.
To find your nearest bring site call our Waste Hotline on 01472 325 841.
Cardboard
Cardboard, providing all other material such as staples, sellotape and plastic is removed, can be deposited in your garden waste bin or taken to either of our CRC sites.
Cardboard included in a garden waste bin is shredded with other garden / organic waste and then sent to an on farm composting site.
If Cardboard is deposited at our CRC sites it is recycled, via a method similar to paper, and eventually becomes new cardboard.
It is estimated that recycling cardboard in this way saves several cubic metres of landfill, 7000 gallons of water and 4100 kilowatt hours of electricity compared to making new cardboard.
Another great way of reducing cardboard waste is to use it in conjunction with other organic waste in a home composting unit.
CRC (Community Recycling Centre) Site
A Community Recycling Centre, or CRC site, is the name given to what was formerly known as the Council tip.
This new name has been introduced to emphasise that this Council facility is provided primarily to enable residents to recycle waste materials including garden waste.
Their secondary use is for the disposal of non-recyclable bulky household waste items.
North East Lincolnshire has 2 CRC sites:
Grimsby, located on Estuary Way, Pyewipe and Immingham, Queens Road.
Both sites are open from 8am to 6pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.
For a list of what you can bring to each CRC site as call our waste hotline on 01472 325 841
D
Disposable Goods
One great way to reduce the waste you generate and minimise your impact on the environment is to monitor your consumption of disposable goods.
Whenever possible buy products that can be re-used instead of single use disposable ones.
For example, rechargeable batteries are a great alternative to single use disposable batteries. Although rechargeable batteries are more expensive initially, they are far better value over time.
Another example is purchasing re-useable cloth nappies instead of using hundreds of disposable ones. Again, although they are more expensive initially, over the long run
re-useable nappies work out much cheaper. (See N - Nappies).
E
Electrical Goods
If you have electrical goods that you wish to dispose of that are still in good working order, local classified adverts or car boot sales are a good option allowing you to raise some cash.
Failing that, there are several charities that can take them off your hands such as 'Freecycle' and 'Don't Dump That' - websites for people to give away or exchange goods.
Another option is various local charities who may be willing to collect working items from you.
If the electrical items are no longer working then they can be dropped off for recycling at either of North East Lincolnshire Council's CRC sites (see C - CRC site)
Egg Boxes
There are three options for recycling cardboard egg boxes (provided labelling stickers are removed)
(1) They can be torn up and added to a home composting bin
(2) They can be left for collection in your brown garden waste bin
(3) They, along with other cardboard, can be taken to either of our CRC sites.
Plastic or polystyrene egg boxes cannot currently be recycled currently and should be deposited in your domestic waste bin.
F
Fridges / Freezers
See B - Bulky Waste
Foil
Due the potential of food traces on the foil we are unable to accept this in with the cans in the ORANGE Box.
However, you may be able to re-use it - if possible fold foil up and keep it until you need it again. Or, as a last resort, foil can be left out for collection in your household waste bin.
G
Garden Waste
Fully utilising your garden waste collection can greatly reduce the volume of material sent for incineration and landfill. Many plant based items found in your garden can be included such as grass, hedge cuttings, leaves, twigs, small branches and any flower or weed material.
Brown and coloured cardboard can also be included - providing all plastic packaging such as cellophane, polystyrene liners and windows has been be removed.
The contents of your garden waste bin are sent for composting. Therefore it is very important that you do not include non-plant material and items that will not rot away or ruin the process
Items such as Tetra Pak cartons and washing up boxes cannot be included. This is because the wax / metal layers and detergent residues present hinder the composting process.
If you do not currently have a garden waste collection, please note that we are currently working on expanding this service to many more properties across the authority - watch out for news. Until then, garden waste and cardboard can be taken to the council's CRC sites at Grimsby and Immingham. Another great alternative is home composting.
Glass
Glass bottles and jars, of any colour, can be recycled by rinsing out and placing them in your GREEN triple box. Or, if you do not have triple boxes, your mini recycling site.
Glass can also be recycled at our communal bring sites across the area. To find out where your nearest bring site is phone our Waste Hotline on 01472 325841.
H
Household Waste
Every property in North East Lincolnshire is provided with a green, usually 240 Litre, household waste bin or has shared access to communal waste bin.
As recycling targets are getting tougher it is vital that all households recycle as much as possible.
In North East Lincolnshire there are facilities to recycle newspapers, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, white / yellow telephone directories, cardboard, computer paper, all types and colours of glass bottles and jars, drink cans and food tins, and plastic bottles.
To find out the day your waste is collected on or, to report a lost or stolen bin, please call our waste hotline on 01472 325 841.
I
Ink Cartridges
Currently, only 5 % of printer and photocopier ink cartridges are recycled meaning the other 95 % are disposed of and end up in landfill or an Energy from Waste plant.
If your printer or photocopier cartridge runs out at home or work, some retailers will take it off your hands for recycling and also offer a discount when purchasing a new cartridge.
Many charities will take used printer cartridges off your hands - they then either sell back to the manufacturer in exchange for a donation or, recondition, refill and resell them themselves.
One example of this is a scheme run by the British Red Cross who receive £1 for every cartridge donated. Cartridges can be recycled by…
(1) Donating them at your nearest Tesco store
(2) Requesting freepost envelopes from the BRC by sending an email to
freepost@redcross.org.uk.

J
Junk Mail
A large proportion of mail delivered to households consists of unwanted letters and leaflets.
To help prevent junk mail arriving at your home address you can contact the 'Mailing Preference Service' to have you address removed from mailing companies lists.
The contact phone number is 0845 703 4599 and the website www.mpsonline.org.uk .
Any junk mail or newspaper inserts you receive can be recycled in the same way as paper through your BLUE box, Mini Recycling Site of communal bring Site.

K
Kitchen waste
A home composter can be used to dispose of uncooked food e.g. vegetables, fruit, peelings, tea bags, egg shells and coffee grounds as well as cardboard and kitchen roll.
Food packaging involves cardboard and all standard and coloured cardboard can be left for collection in your garden waste bin or taken to either of our CRC sites. However all other materials such as plastic or cling-film still attached must be removed.
L
Leaves
Leaves can be disposed of through your garden waste collection or, at either of our CRC sites.
An even better option is to consider home composting where leaves, garden and kitchen waste can be combined with waste paper and cardboard to produce compost for your garden.
M
Mobile Phones
If you have an old mobile phone that you no longer use there are several options that are much better for the environment, and your wallet, than throwing it in the bin.
You could get some cash from your old phone by selling it second hand or, trading it in. Many mobile phone retailers offer a discount on new contracts if you hand over your old phone.
Another idea is donation to charity - some supermarkets offer reward points or charity donations in exchange for old mobile phones. Once collected these mobiles are sent for recycling or reconditioning.
Charities also collect mobiles directly or provide freepost envelopes to post phones to them.

N
Nappies
Around 8 million disposable nappies are used every day in the UK. Countrywide this equates to 77 000 double decker busses full every year.
Re-useable or 'cloth' nappies are a practical and easy alternative that can benefit you financially as well as the environment.
While comparable to disposables in terms of their carbon footprint, re-useable nappies are much more environmentally friendly in terms of minimising waste sent to landfill or incineration.
North East Lincolnshire Council run an incentive scheme to encourage the use of re-useable nappies where we fund half the cost up to a value of £50. For details phone 01472 325 843.

O
Oil
The way you should dispose of waste oil depends on the type and quantity of oil in question.
If there is less than 2 Litres of cooking oil then, providing it is either in a sealed container or solidified, it can be left for collection in your standard household waste bin.
If there is more than two litres then the cooking oil should be taken to our Grimsby CRC site.
It is important to note however that we are currently unable to accept oil from commercial / trade sources.
If you have waste engine oil you wish to dispose of, then we are able to accept up to 5 litres in a container at our Grimsby CRC site. It is not acceptable to dispose of any engine oil in your household waste bin.
P
Paper
In North East Lincolnshire you can recycle newspapers, magazines, home office paper, catalogues, leaflets and flyers, junk mail, envelopes and telephone directories. However Yellow Pages cannot be recycled with normal paper.
All these types of waste paper can be recycled by placing them in your BLUE triple box, mini recycling site or communal bring site.
To find your bring site please call our Waste Hotline on 01472 325 841.
It is worth noting that if you are disposing of confidential documents such as bank statements, bills and credit card information, these should be shredded first to help prevent identity theft.
Plastic Bottles
Plastic bottles can be recycled at a number of our large recycling banks providing the bottles are washed, reasonably clean and have all lids or tops removed.
It is very helpful if you try to squash the bottles as far as possible too. This means more can fit in the recycling bank and collection vehicle thus making the recycling more efficient.
To find your nearest plastics recycling bank call our waste hotline on 01472 325 841

Textiles
If you have any clothes, quilts, shoes or other textiles then there are many alternatives to consider other than your household waste bin.
Around 1 million tonnes of textiles were thrown away in the UK last year - a significant proportion of this could have been recycled.
North East Lincolnshire also has a network of charity operated banks where textiles can be deposited. Clothes too shabby for donation can be re-used as cleaning rags.
Trade Waste
If you operate a business and produce 'trade' waste must ensure that you make the appropriate arrangements for disposal under the Duty of Care as set out in the Environmental Protection Act.
North East Lincolnshire Council, as well as local companies, are able to advise you of the best way to comply and also operate dedicated trade waste collection services.

Waste Hotline
For ANY queries you might have regarding waste collection services in North East Lincolnshire please call our Waste Hotline on 01472 325 841.
We will be happy to help out with a range of issues including collection dates, missed collections, assisted collections, bulky waste collections, lost or stolen bins.
X
Xmas / Christmas
Over the Christmas and New Year period we make changes to your usual waste and recycling collection services and dates but also put on extra services.
Every household receives a collection as near to their usual collection day as possible and is sent a calendar at the end of November / start of December to inform them of the revised collection dates.
No household waste or triple box recycling collections are made on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Years Day.
The garden waste collection service is suspended for 1 month to allow our collection crews to man additional domestic waste and recycling collection vehicles. This enables us to keep up with the extra volume of waste and catch up for the three public holidays.
Christmas trees can be left out for with your next garden waste collection. If you do not currently receive a garden waste collection you can call our waste hotline and add your name to a list and the garden waste crew collect the tree.
This applies to real Christmas trees only.
Christmas cards can be recycled at local branches of TKMaxx, Tesco, Marks & Spencer , WH Smith and Sainsbury's.
Y
Yellow Pages
Yellow Pages cannot be recycled with the standard paper recycling.
The facility that reprocesses our paper recycling does not accept them because the directory contains a significant amount of yellow dye and, Yellow Pages are also often put out for recycling at the same time of year by everyone - when the updated directories are delivered.
However, North East Lincolnshire Council collects Yellow Pages for recycling at our CRC sites in Grimsby and Immingham.
Also, during June and July, the council and local schools participate in the 'Yellow Woods Challenge' - a competition where schools compete to see who can collect the most.
Z
Zips
Try and reuse zips on other garments.
