What happens to your Waste and Recycling?

Last Year we:

Recycled: 27.28%

Landfilled: 18.45%

Sent For Energy Recovery: 54.27%

Refuse

NELC has a 25 year contract with Newlincs to handle all waste and recycling generated within North East Lincolnshire.

All waste placed in your green refuse bin gets taken to the Newlincs Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Stallingborough. The waste is then emptied into a ' waste pit ' and it is then fed into the EfW where it is burned. The electricity and heat generated from this process is used to power the plant and the offices on the site. The heat is sold to a neighbouring company, Synthomer who use it for steam generation. Any surplus electricy is fed into the national grid.

Due to the geographical location of North East Lincolnshire, EfW is the best option for dealing with the waste locally.

At busy periods of the year such as Christmas it may be necessary to dispose of some household waste at the landfill site in Immingham. This only happens when the EfW is at capacity or if the plant is on a shutdown period for maintenance.  Last year we only sent 18.45% of our total waste to landfill.

Garden Waste

When your Garden Waste is collected it is taken to the Newlincs facility where it is litterpicked and shredded. We currently use 4 local reprocessors who collect the waste for on-farm composting. This method is known as Windrows.
