Municipal Waste Management Strategy

North East Lincolnshire Council Waste Strategy Consultation Document 2008

North East Lincolnshire Council published its waste strategy in December 2004 titled No Time To Waste (pdf 1141k).  Many of the initiatives within this strategy were implemented to enable North East Lincolnshire Council to exceed its government target of recycling 26% of household waste in 2006/07.

We are currently reviewing this waste strategy to include new ways of thinking and revised targets, we have also written a Strategic Environmental Assessment (pdf 575k) of the draft waste strategy. You can view our new draft Waste Strategy Draft (pdf 254k) for 2008.

The strategy has recently gone through consultation but you can still get in touch and let us know your views using  our online consultation form

How we currently manage waste

In 1999 North East Lincolnshire Council entered into a 25 year contract with NEWLINCS (http://www.newlincs.com/) to manage the waste for the residents of North East Lincolnshire. North East Lincolnshire Council retains the responsibility of collecting the waste from households and delivering it to NEWLINCS.  NEWLINCS have the responsibility for its management recycling and disposal. NEWLINCS also have responsibility for the management of the following types of waste

  • materials placed in dustbins by house holders
  • materials collected from households as part of kerbside collection schemes
  • materials deposited by members of the public at Community Recycling Centres
  • materials deposited by members of the public at a "Bring To" site and street sweepings and litter

All household waste not separately collected for recycling or composting goes to the Energy from Waste facility.  North East Lincolnshire Council is the first council to go into a contract with TIRU group to produce energy from waste. The plant equipped with a Cyclergie oscillating kiln, consumes 7 tonnes/hour and has a turbine generator of 30.2MW.

Currently energy is recovered from 57% of waste collected in North East Lincolnshire Council; we recycle and composed 27% and landfill 18%.
