Sustainable Development in North East Lincolnshire
Have you ever wondered what life will be like in a few years time? Will your neighbourhood be a pleasant, safe and friendly area to live? Will you be able to enjoy green, open spaces, breathing clean air? Will today's young people have the opportunity to achieve their goals and dreams in life? Will North East Lincolnshire provide them with a healthy, safe and attractive place to live, work and raise a family of their own?
All these issues affect our quality of life. Some of these issues will be of more importance to you than others, but all of them are at the heart of "sustainable development".
Put simply, sustainable development is about "improving the quality of life for everyone, not just for today, but also for future generations". It is about striving to improve people's quality of life in a way that has a minimal impact upon the environment that supports us.
The Council's first sustainability strategy, published in 2000, took the opportunity to properly integrate economic, social and environmental concerns to promote prosperity that is more lasting, less damaging to the environment and where the benefits are shared more equally among the community.
In 2003, this was superceded by the Community Strategy. A requirement of the Local Government Act 2000, the Community Strategy seeks to improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area. The Community Strategy includes a Sustainability Appraisal Tool which the Council has adopted to appraise all major initiatives. This tool and guidance on its application can also be found on the links to the rights.
