What does a typical working day for you involve?
Investigation of road traffic collisions, advice and assessment on highway design, educating and informing members of the public, other council officers and council members.
Do you need any qualifications or specific training? (If not, what were your circumstances?)
Engineering degree, RoSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents) safety auditor certification, CAD (Computer Aided Design) skills. (I started as a part-time casual Traffic Enumerator with a neighbouring Authority with no engineering skills or qualifications, but good GCSEs and computer skills and the ability and willingness to learn. I was successful in securing a full-time post within the Highways section where they offered me further training which enhanced my skills and ensured I was successful in securing this post).
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Diversity of the roles to which I need to apply my skills. Very busy job - no time to get bored!
What is the most challenging part of your job?
Accepting that I cannot stop every accident.
Is there any progression opportunities in your career?
Yes.
If you could change one aspect of your job what would it be?
Sometimes it would be nice to work in a quiet environment with no interruptions!
What inspires or motivates you to do your job on a daily basis?
Genuinely feel I am providing a useful service by contributing to the overall safety of the public.
