Why take an allotment?

Working an allotment allows you to grow.

  • Grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables at low cost.
  • Grow in health and enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise.
  • Grow new friendships and meet new people.
  • Grow in knowledge and skills as you learn the techniques of gardening.

And while you do all this you are helping to take care of the local environment by recycling and producing food locally, so that the children of tomorrow can continue to grow.

How much do allotments cost?

Allotments are not expensive to rent. Fees are collected on an annual basis and include a charge for the water used on allotment sites.

Rents vary according to the size of the plot taken and reductions are available for those who are 60 years old and over, unemployed for 12 months or more, or are in receipt of an appropriate benefit or allowance.

How do I get an allotment?

Simply take a look through the information contained in these pages and determine which allotment site you are interested in. Then fill in an Application Form and return it to the Council. Application Forms are available on this Internet Site via the Allotments Home Page. Your application will be acknowledged with a list of vacancies at the site of your choice together with further details of the site and an application form to fill in for the plot you would like to take. From this a Tenancy Agreement will be drawn up for you to sign and having completed this Agreement and returned it to the Council you can start work on your plot and begin to grow.
