Sweet Chestnut

Sweet Chestnut

Castanea sativa

Growing to around 90 ft (30m) the Sweet Chestnut will become a large spreading tree if grown in isolation.

It is native to southern Europe but is widely planted elsewhere for its edible nuts - the traditional Christmas roasted chestnuts.

The wood is used for panelling and beams. Due to its resistance to exposure it is also used for fence palings.
