Beelsby

there's more than just countryside!

The following information has been compiled by Matthew Humberston School with the aid of North East Lincolnshire Council.

A small village and parish in the north of the Wolds with beautiful scenery and far stretching views across the marsh towards Grimsby. From the churchyard, the gleam of the sea can be seen on sunny mornings and the lighthouse at Spurn Point, with the houses at its base, are visible on very clear days, although they are fourteen miles away!

After the war in 1945, this small village had its own bus service operating a bus to Grimsby every Saturday afternoon. It was called Brixtow's of Claxby, but unfortunately it did not survive very long as a rival company, the Hatcliffe Bus Company opposed the service even though they would not send their own buses through the village. There was even a tribunal held in Lincoln to try and overcome this matter but it failed!

Most villages had a village hall, but Beelsby did not so had to make do with an old grocery shop. It was known as the village hut event though it was made of brick and tiles! With the arrival of the television to the village, attendance to the activities in the "hut" declined therefore it was demolished and a garden house was built. Today a new garden house stands on the site.
