Cleethorpes Tourist Trail
'there's more than just a beach'
Matthew Humberston School with the aid of North East Lincolnshire Council has compiled the following information.
Stretching out over the River Humber, the pier is a formidable landmark, and an excellent starting point to discover the unique sights of Cleethorpes. Head up the North Promenade and witness golden sandy beaches. After a short walk arrive at Cleethorpes Railway Station and the Mermaid Fish Restaurant, formerly known as 'Cascades'. The walk along the North Promenade is quite delightful especially on those long summer evenings.
Returning to the Pier, turn right into Sea Road heading towards Alexandra Road. Cross here, pass the Dolphin Hotel, and walk into the Market Place where a variety of restaurants and takeaways offer a comprehensive selection of culinary fayre. On Wednesdays and Saturdays find bargains galore as Cleethorpes plays host to its own traditional market.
Turn into St Peter's Avenue, where a variety of goods can be bought. Why not stop off at Sutherlands for the finest fish and chips . Along the Avenue view the fascinating architecture of St Peter's Church and St Peter's school, before continuing on to Sea View Street. Shop here and recall the halcyon days of yesteryear with many of the buildings retaining their Victorian charm.
Carry on to High Cliff Road with its memorable Ross Castle, both reminders of the former heights of Cleethorpes. Climb the rugged stone steps of this Victorian folly and look out over the Humber Estuary. The Humber Forts, Spurn Head and Lighthouse can all be seen on a clear day.
Continue along the promenade past the Leisure Centre and Boating Lake to reach the Cleethorpes coastal path and finally... The Meridian Line! Where east truly meets west. This is the end of the trail so why not jump aboard the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway for a relaxing return to the promenade and another bag of fish and chips!
