East Ravendale
there's more than just countryside!
The following information has been compiled by Matthew Humberston School with the aid of North East Lincolnshire Council.
The history of this village can be traced to at least 1202, when the son of the Earl of Brittany founded a priory. The two main places of interest are the church and the school. The church of St Martin was entirely rebuilt in 1857, but there was a church on the site from Norman times. The cost of the new building was £1,400 which was raised by subscription, largely due to the efforts of Rev J P Parkinson, the rural dean. A stained glass window is dedicated to his memory and situated in the east end of the church.
The school has served the community and neighbouring villages since 1856. Attendance at the school depended upon activities of the farms - should extra hands be needed, the boys then stayed away. Numbers at the rural school therefore fluctuated between thirteen and one hundred and twenty.
