Grimsby Heritage - Grimsby Tourist Trail
'there's more than just a port'
Matthew Humberston School with the aid of North East Lincolnshire Council has compiled the following information.
Grimsby, Europe's Food Town offers you what no other town in the country can offer - a deep history, a great selection of shops, a most famous fishing heritage and much, much more.
This superb trail starts at Freeman Street with its lively market, selling a tremendous range of food, gifts and bargains. Look out for the "Peabung", Grimsby's oldest fish and chip restaurant serving the freshest fish for miles around. Head along Freeman Street towards the docks but make sure you take a detour down Duncombe Street to view the fisherman's Chapel and.... don't forget to turn along Strand Street to view 'Strand School'. Try and spot the playground... it certainly is not where you would expect!
Now turn left onto Cleethorpe Road, walking along the flyover. Making sure you take time to pause and view the 'Ice House 'and then the 'Dock Tower', Grimsby's most famous landmark. Rumour has it that it was built on cotton wool!
Turning left along 'Victoria Street North' where you arrive at the magnificent building of local printers Albert Gait. Take the next right towards Corporation Bridge, this bridge was constructed in the 1920's. Good views can be seen from here of the Dock Tower, the docks area and of course the Fishing Heritage Centre. Take time out on your tour to visit this award-winning attraction and experience what life was like for the trawlermen who braved the Arctic seas to bring home the catch.
Next door to the Fishing Heritage Centre is the PS Lincoln Castle. This paddle steamer originally ferried people across the Humber but is now converted into a public house so why not sit back and relax with a well earned drink.
Leaving the Alexandra Dock behind follow the footpath into the town centre past the Freshney Place Shopping Centre. Here over 100 shops and stores are all gathered under one roof and well deserve a visit. Continue across Victoria Street, past the library to Town Hall Square, where the impressive Town Hall can be seen for the first time. Leave Town Hall Square behind you and walk along Osbourne Street, passing The Yarborough Hotel on Bethlehem Street to reach your final destination...St James Church, which contains many reminders of Grimsby's heritage and played an important part in the history of the town. It was even once home to the town's fire engine!
This is the end of the trail so why not enjoy the remainder of your time shopping in Freshney Place or nearby Abbeygate, or simply relax in one of the local pubs, inns or restaurants before going home.
