Grimsby Heritage - The Corporation Bridge
The original swing bridge looked towards the Central Market and the Clock Tower which was opened in 1873 and had been debated in the Town Council for much of its life. Eventually the old bridge gave way when a winch stripped a number of cogs and after this incident a tug was used to open the bridge.
The existing Corporation Bridge was constructed by dock engineer Alfred C. Gardener in 1925. It cost almost £60,000 to build and was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in 1928. The companies involved in its construction included Skinningham, Frodingham Iron and Steel Co, and Dalzell Steel, many of the workers names were engraved on to the girders.
It took ten men to wind the mechanism to raise the bridge, although this machinery has itself been out of action in recent years. There are plans to renovate the bridge to its former glory in the near future.
