Grimsby Heritage - The Fisherman's Chapel

Fishermen and their families held strong religious beliefs in the 19th and early 20th Century. This was at a time when fishing was a perilous occupation and many men perished at sea. Often the main social points for fishermen were the church and chapels. Originally opened in 1904, when Grimsby was at the height of the fishing trade, the Fishermen's Chapel was used by fishermen and their families for Sunday Services and also as a place of prayer to thank God for successful fishing trips.

The Fisherman's Chapel was originally located on Tiverton Street at the Bethel Mission. In 1966 it was relocated to Duncombe Street where it still stands today. It was opened in memorial to the fishermen of Grimsby who were lost at sea throughout the twentieth century. The cost of building the chapel was helped by contributions from the Sailors Children's Society. The chapel is still visited today by many families from all over the country that wish to remember their loved ones. It is also used for weddings and other special services.

The chapel is a very attractive building with lots of dedications and memorials. It still holds the original stained glass windows that feature fishing scenes including the patron saint of fishing Saint Peter. The windows were originally in the Bethel Mission and were transferred to the new chapel.
