Hawerby Cum Beesby

there's more than just countryside!

The following information has been compiled by Matthew Humberston School with the aid of North East Lincolnshire Council.

Hawerby cum Beesby is an excellent example of a deserted medieval village. Beesby is mentioned in the Domesday Book and there were five house recorded in 1563. During the Middle Ages, the Black Death killed about half the population leaving only four families to survive the tragedy and ensure the future of the village.

Hawerby Hall is a beautiful mansion that is seated on the Wolds hillsides commanding extensive views. Built in 1781, it was much enlarged and improved in 1840. In the shadow of the hall, tucked away behind the yews and nettles lies the disused church of St Margaret. Built in 1846, this church once provided services for a congregation of seventy.

The soil in the surrounding fields is primarily clay and chalk. This provides an excellent grounding for growing such crops as wheat, barley, oats and turnips.
