The North East Lincolnshire Wolds Driving Trail
there's more than just countryside!
The following information has been compiled by Matthew Humberston School with the aid of North East Lincolnshire Council.
North East Lincolnshire is home to many picture postcard villages that nestle in the wooded valleys of the Wolds. This driving trail visits ten such villages, enabling the best of this area of outstanding natural beauty to be enjoyed. The trail starts at Laceby, a village of Viking origin which over the years has developed into a commuter village for neighbouring Grimsby. Well worth a visit is the Nag's Head pub that has reputedly been entered into the Guinness Book of Records! But...why?
Beelsby offers quite beautiful scenery and from the high points you will be rewarded with far stretching views across hilltops and marshes. Next stop is Hatcliffe, a small picturesque village with a hidden watermill. In a recent dig at Wold Newton a coin dating back to 114AD was found. Whilst travelling through the village take particular note to the name signs on the estate cottages! Nearby Hawerby cum Beesby is an excellent example of a deserted medieval village that was struck by the Black Death. Another village with a long history is East Ravendale and today the school and the church are the main place of interest.
Ashby Cum Fenby was originally two hamlets but during the medieval period they joined together to become one. It is hard to believe that, long ago, in the days before the Ice Age, the cliff edge that the village is situated on, would have had the sea lapping against it!!!
By now you will surely be in need of refreshment and what could be more refreshing than home-made ice cream from the tiny shop at Brigsley. Whilst here take in the 16th century thatched cottage situated nearby.
The last two villages in the trail are completely different. Waltham, like Laceby, is a commuter village yet still retains an old world charm. The main feature is the windmill with its unique feature of having six sails! And last but not least is Barnoldby Le Beck complete with its public house, The Ship Inn. So take time out, relax with a drink, and reflect on your journey. We are sure you will agree that there really is more to the North East Lincolnshire Wolds than meet the eye...
