Pier

The Pier was built in 1872 by Head Wrightson for £8,000 and opened on August Bank Holiday 1873. A pier head concert hall was built in 1888 but was destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1906 a new pavilion was built near the promenade and still remains today.

The pier was breached in 1940 for defence measures to combat the threat of enemy invasion. After the war, the Government could not afford to replace the gap to the isolated seaward section. Some of the salvaged material was used on Leicester City Football Club's new stand!

The pier now measures 355 feet compared to its original 1200 feet. The end used to reach the water even in low tide at its original length. The pier will celebrate its 134th birthday in 2007.

In 1985 the new owner transformed the pavilion into a modern nightclub named Pier 39 with a capacity of 700 people. Thirteen years later a £600,000 facelift added two new bars and a new dance floor making it the largest night-club in the area.
