Cleethorpes Railway

In 1848 the railway only went as far as Grimsby however in 1863 despite huge protests from the tradesmen of Grimsby the line was extended to Cleethorpes. This brought in a huge amount of tourists and put Cleethorpes on the map as a holiday destination. The Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company then went on to build the promenade in 1885. The original railway station was used for twenty years prior to the extension of the railway station and the building of a new platform. Today the station building has been converted into the Number One Public House.

The Mermaid Restaurant

The building housing the restaurant was built in 1880 as the railway station's rest room. It was originally built as a temporary building and was due to be destroyed in 1910, however it still stands today. It is a grade two listed building and unusually the only part which is brick is the foundation. The building has a wood and wrought iron construction and plenty of hand crafted iron work can be seen.
