The shortlist of 6 books were selected from 112 entries, and was announced on  the 14th September 2006.  The longlist for the ManBooker Prize 2006 was announced on the 14th August and can be viewed here.

Who goes to the Readers' Groups?
The numbers of members vary and members are of different ages and from different walks of life.  New members are always welcome.

What do they do?
The group chooses a book or topic that they all want to read for a future meeting and the library provides multiple copies. Discussion about the book is not highbrow, but about sharing personal responses to the book - favourite bits, how it made you feel, what you thought of the characters or even why you didn't like the book. It doesn't matter if you don't read the book. Listening to other people talk about it may inspire you to read it too. Usually people chat about the other books they have been reading and pass on recommendations. The range of books is broad, varying from award winners to bestsellers.
