The Hallgarth Collection
The Hallgarth Collection of Lincolnshire local history photographs is held in the Grimsby Library. It consists of approximately 17,000 images of the historic county of Lincolnshire covering the area from the Humber to Wash. The earliest photographs in the collection date from about 1850 and the most recent from the 1970s.
The collection was put together by Bill Hallgarth, well known local historian and school teacher. During the Second World War Bill Hallgarth served in the Fire Service and took advantage of government schemes at the end of the war to become a qualified teacher. Throughout his career he was active throughout Lincolnshire giving talks to local groups and collecting old photographs and other memorabilia of the area.
One of Bill Hallgarth's main interests was windmills and this is reflected in the collection which has photographs of most of the mills in Lincolnshire. These include local windmills in Scartho and in Waltham but also those around Boston in the south of the county as well.
The Hallgarth Collection is just part of the photographic collection of North East Lincolnshire Museums and Libraries. If you would like to view any of the collections or take advantage of the photographic reproductions service (subject to copyright) the contact details are as follows:
