George Skelton
An exhibition currently on show in the newly refurbished cafe at the Heritage Centre, Alexandra Dock, shows the work of Grimsby Artist George Skelton, who was born in 1855 and left behind a remarkable record of the changing faces of Victorian and Edwardian Grimsby. Skelton was not a professional artist, he worked for many years at Hull savings Bank in Victoria Street, retiring soon after being injured in a road accident. He died at his home in Abbey Park Road in 1932 aged 77. The Museum Service had a collection of about 80 of Skelton's drawings and paintings showing views of Grimsby and its surrounding villages. They have been framed and are on view for the first time at the Heritage Centre. Also included in the show is a recently cleaned portrait of George Skelton by the renowned Grimsby artist Thomas Kennington.
Entry to the Skelton exhibition is free and it is a great treat not to be missed by all who have an interest in the history of our town. Normal admission to the fishing heritage centre applies
