People's Park, set right in the centre of Grimsby , offers a place to escape from the noise and traffic, sit back and relax - maybe with a picnic. In the park, you can visit the floral hall cafeteria or have a game of bowls. There is also a play area for the kids and a lake where swans, ducks and other water fowl can be fed.
People's Park has been brought back to its original Victorian splendour with a grant of just under £2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). A new pavilion and café facility, the Smethurst monument has been restored new street furniture, a terrace in front of the Floral Hall, reinstatement of the original planting schemes, restoration of the bowls pavilion and the demolition of the 1960's toilet blocks.
The money is also funding a full-time, on-site park manager, who is discourage vandalism, encourage community involvement and plan an events calendar to ensure that the park is used to its full potential. Trails will be developed around the park around the themes of heritage, natural environment, horticulture, health and well-being, complimented by interpretation and display boards so that visitors to the park, young or old, will be able to learn more about this heritage gem in the middle of Grimsby.
People's Park is of national significance. It was registered by English Heritage as a Park of Special Historic Interest in England in 2000.
This project has restore the features and character of the park, both respecting its history and reflecting present day needs.
The story of the park's restoration began in 1997, when the original conservation and management plans were produced. In March 2004 the project received a Stage 1 Pass* from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which awarded the project with a £62,800 development grant.
In November 2004 the council appointed as project managers and after a period of public consultation, the Stage 2* bid was submitted in July 2005.
On Tuesday 29 November a grant of £1,937,000 was approved, enabling the council to access all the money needed to transform the park. The HLF funding will be matched from a range of sources to create a total project budget of £2.7m.
Work on the park is almost completed and we will be opening the park in the summer.
