Sports Development - Press Release

2004 HumberYouth Games

AROUND 150 girls and boys from North East Lincolnshire represented the council at the 2004 Humber Youth Games on Sunday (June 13).

The Humber Youth Games is a sports event in which individuals and teams from the four local authorities in the Humber Sports Partnership come together to compete in a variety of sports.

The four local authorities which take part in the Humber Youth Games are North East Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, Hull City and East Riding of Yorkshire. The event took place at three different venues in Hull - the University of Hull, St. Mary's Sports College and the Costello Stadium.

There were eight different sporting competitions which made up the Humber Youth Game. These were athletics, basketball, girls football, hockey, netball, high five netball, rugby league, rugby union and tennis.

More than 900 children aged between nine and 15 competed in these disciplines.

Athletes and teams were selected to represent North East Lincolnshire at the Humber Youth Games after months of trials, tournaments and talent identification programmes co-ordinated by the council's sports development unit.

Boys and girls were selected for the athletics event from a series of sessions which took place at King George V Stadium in the run up to the games. The school year five and six athletics squad excelled itself by winning its competition out right while the year seven and eight squad finished runners-up.

The basketball squads were picked from a similar series of selection sessions which took place at Grimsby College. The basketball tournaments provided some extremely tough competition for the North East Lincolnshire teams and the girls team did extremely well to finish second to a strong Hull team. Six girls football teams went to the games from North East Lincolnshire. All six squads were school teams that were invited to represent North East Lincolnshire after their performance in leagues and tournaments held locally. The six teams were Signhills Junior School, Old Clee Junior School, Immingham School, Toll Bar School, Havelock School and Humberston School. All six teams played very well with Toll Bar shining in the school year seven and eight competition - finishing runners-up.

Four hockey squads attended from our area, with the girls year seven and eight team finishing runners-up in their part of the competition. Teams also went to the games to take part in the high five and netball tournaments. Of these teams it was the school year seven and eight A squad that were outstanding and won their event.

There were also rugby and tennis squads taking part in the competition with the tennis team finishing second to a strong North Lincolnshire team.

All of the children that took part in the Humber Youth Games enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were a credit to the authority.

Councillor Geoff Lowis, portfolio holder for regeneration and community learning, said: "The Humber Youth Games is a showcase for sport in North East Lincolnshire. The success of all those representing our authority demonstrates what sporting talent we have and how important sport is to our community."
