Community Sports Coaching Scheme
In July 2002 the Department for Culture Media and Sports via the Coaching Task Force identified:
- Limited opportunities for coaches to develop as a career
- Few active professional coaches
- Lack of professional development of coaches
The headline national objective was to therefore establish 3,000 paid and qualified Community Sports Coaches working at a local level, to increase the number and range of coaching opportunities according to strategic and local need by 2006.
The scheme offered an opportunity to make a significant impact on community sport.
Phase 1
In the first phase of Community Sports Coaches - 12 coaches were appointed. The sports covered are football, basketball, tennis, cricket, swimming, table tennis, rugby union and street sports and they are based at varying locations throughout the Humber region.
- Community Sports Coaching Scheme in the Humber
- Increase the Number of qualified coaches in employment in the Humber, both Full Time and Part Time
- Further develop a career structure for coaches in the Humber

- Retain people within sport and physical activity
North East Lincolnshire has benefited from Community Sports Coaches in Swimming, Basketball, Cricket and Table Tennis., with programs of activities co-coordinated through the School Sports Partnerships and Local Clubs
Phase 2
In the Humber there has been a £1.6 million investment into local sports coaching across the region. Over 23 coaches have been appointed to work with the local community in a range of projects in settings across the four local authorities.
The four local authorities within the Humber each submitted bids to the National Lottery and were successful in securing the funding for a range of projects.
