Lottery Cash Boost for Sports in Grimsby
North East Lincolnshire Council's Community Regeneration Department will be opening the multi use sports facilities at Freeman Street Resource and Community Centre in Kent Street on Wednesday 16 April, 2003 at 2.00pm with a ceremony performed by Councillor Ken Townsend, Mayor of North East Lincolnshire. North East Lincolnshire secured an award of £379,104 from the Sport England Lottery Fund, which together with a grant from the Single Regeneration Budget and the tireless efforts of the local community, raised the remainder of the cash and brought these marvellous facilities to fruition.
There will be organised activities for young people to participate in, including football, basketball, hockey and netball, as well as demonstrations on the skatepark. The activities will be running from 10.00am - 6.00pm and are being organised to encourage the local community to come in and use the facilities as well as to allow them to have the opportunity to participate in the various sports and leisure opportunities that will now be available to them.
In conjunction with the provision of these new facilities a Community Sports Development Officer has been appointed. The Officer, who is based at the new facilities will be responsible for programming the usage of the facilities as well as providing sporting and recreational activities in the Marsh and North East Wards. Funding for this position has been secured through the Sports England Active Communities Development Fund, with partnership funding from the North East Lincolnshire Children's Fund.
Chris Jones, Development Manager, for North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "This multi use sports facility will provide a range of opportunities for local people of all ages to participate in sporting activities, from tennis, football and cricket to skateboarding. Already the commitment from local groups in raising funds towards the whole project has been impressive and I know the facility will make a positive difference to the lives of local people."
For further information regarding this event or the booking of the facilities please contact Denise Platts, Freeman Street Resource and Community Centre Manager on 01472 325915.
