North East Lincolnshire Talent Leads the Way at the Humber Youth Games

Over 250 young sportsmen and women travelled to Hull on Sunday 22 June to represent North East Lincolnshire at the annual Humber Youth Games. Competing in a number of different sports against young people from Kingston upon Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, our local boys and girls excelled by winning four and finishing runners up in five of the 18 events.

North East Lincolnshire teams celebrated success in the Athletics (U11s), Girls Football, Girls Hockey and Girls Rugby competitions with second place in the Athletics (U13s), Girls Basketball, Boys Hockey, Netball and Tennis events.

Three different venues played host to eight different sports. Hull University provided the setting for Girls Football, Rugby and Netball, the Vulcan Arena hosted Basketball and Hockey and Costello Stadium staged the Athletics, High 5 and Tennis competitions.

Active Sports Officer for North East Lincolnshire Council, Chris Dyson, who co-ordinated the local entry said: "The Youth Games are always a high point in the local summer sporting calendar. They are now very well established and provide a really enjoyable and competitive outlet for young sportsmen and women. The Games provide youngsters with a real opportunity to showcase their skills and represent their local area in a number of targeted sports."

Councillor Geoff Lowis, Portfolio Holder for Community Regeneration added: "It is vital that young people get the opportunity to participate in the sport they enjoy and compete to utilise their skills. The well-established and popular Humber Youth Games provide the opportunity for this. I would like to pass on my congratulations to all those involved in this years success."

The success achieved by North East Lincolnshire at this years Games is not only a credit to the young people involved but is also a testament to the strong developmental work in numerous sports planned and implemented by the Sports Development Unit, both throughout the year and leading up to the Games, in partnership with a dedicated network of local coaches and sports clubs.
