New Skatepark Set to Open
Youths on skates and skateboards congregating around Grimsby Courts and Register Office could soon be a problem of the past, thanks to a new £439,795 state of the art sports venue. Freeman Street Resource and Community Centre, part of North East Lincolnshire Council's Community Regeneration, is currently building a multi-purpose sports facility in Kent Street.
The development includes a large purpose built skatepark which will have free access between 9am and approximately 9pm every day. So skaters will have a suitable and safe location to practice their skills, whilst keeping disturbance to the general public, to a minimum.
The skatepark is due to be completed by the end of next week, with an official opening in April. Many of the local skaters helped to design the facilities themselves and even raised substantial funds for the project. Other funding has been received from North East Lincolnshire Council, Sport England, the National Children's Fund and SRB.
The facilities will also include a free access kickabout area for football, cricket, netball and hockey, as well as two other multi-use, all-weather pitches and changing facilities for training, coaching and tournaments.
Councillor Peter Ramsden, Portfolio Holder, said: "This is a marvellous facility, exactly what the local youngsters have wanted for so long. I appeal to skaters to come along and make good use of the skatepark - which is free for all users, instead of risking injury on the streets."
