February Half Term
Community Sports Coaches Write Up
With Schools closed for a week due to half term, the Sport Development Team offered local children the opportunity to take part in some extra sport activities.
Several venues were selected throughout North East Lincolnshire to give all children the chance to take part.
The emphasis of the sessions was to provide the participants with basic knowledge of different sports such as Football, Basketball, Gymnastics, Cricket and fun based activities whilst playing in a safe environment.
The sessions proved to be a massive success with over 150 children taking part. All of the coaches were very impressed to see the children's attitude to listen and learn new skills, whilst working as a team and making new friends.
Below is a report from the session held at Leas Junior School on Wednesday 20th February 1st Hour
The session began with a warm which involved moving in different directions whilst reacting to instructions. The participant were then split into four teams and played some Multi Skills relay races.
The races involved using different techniques of moving such as running, hopping, jumping and crab walking. In between each race the children were given a minute to work together and discuss ideas that could help their team.
It was very interesting to see some of the ideas they discussed put into practice and how they adapted themselves in a positive way when their ideas weren't successful. After a quick drinks break the children were straight into a game of Quick Cricket.
The children demonstrated some excellent batting techniques and managed to gain very good scores.
One girl managed to achieve over 30 runs for her team which was recorded as the highest individual score of the week.
Also both teams fielded well and produced some impressive catches.
2nd Hour
The participants had done a lot of team games and running activities during the 1st hour, so we decided to work on some Gymnastic/Balancing exercises to start the 2nd hour off.
Using benches, the children had to balance whilst walking across the bench to pick up a ball and throw it to their partner.
This got the children to focus on balancing whilst improving their eye and hand co-ordination.
We progressed the session each time to make it harder and test the participants balancing skills.
This session finished with the children balancing a bean bag on their head whilst stood on one leg throwing a ball to each other.
This is a difficult skill to do and the children applied themselves very well. For the last half an hour we gave the children a choice of what activity they would like to do. It was no surprise to the coaches that they all wanted to play dodge ball.
Dodge Ball is a fantastic game that provides the participants with fun and excitement. It also develops skills that are very important when playing invasion games.
The children have to focus on dodging whilst looking for space and applying tactics.
The half term courses gave children of all levels of ability the chance to make new friends and enjoy the sports they were playing.
They left each course full of enthusiasm and hopefully with some more ideas and skills. Equally the coaches had a very enjoyable time and are looking forward to carrying on these sessions during the Easter Holidays.
Community Sports Coaching Success Story
Working along side Adam Cook an Occupational Therapist and others in his team we have set up a programme called Kick Start for men that is held at Clee Fields Every Friday morning.
This has been running for the last 20weeks and numbers have been steadily rising.
On of the member from the group is Tapojay Mukherjee from New Waltham.
He has attended 19 out of 20 sessions.
Tapojay has gained a lot of confidence from the sessions and his football ability has got better each week.
From this programme he has set up his own football team with friends from his local pub that trains on Thursday evening.
There were 15 that attended last week and they are looking to join a league in the near future.
After the sessions the team go for a meal after and socialise.
