Sports Development - Press Release
Applications can now be submitted for a scheme which provides limited free access to sports facilities in North East Lincolnshire.
The sports development unit of North East Lincolnshire Council and Sport & Leisure Management (SLM) have been successfully working in partnership to provide a scheme of support to the most talented athletes in North East Lincolnshire.
The programme, called the STAR scheme, provides athletes with limited free access to sports facilities within the area which are managed on behalf of the council by SLM.
Facilities which members of the scheme can access include Grimsby Swimming Pool, Grimsby Leisure Centre, Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, King George V Stadium, Immingham Swimming Pool and Immingham Sports Centre.
To be eligible for scheme membership, athletes must take part in their sport at a representative level of county or above and live in North East Lincolnshire.
Applications must be supported by a reference from an officer of the national governing body of the relevant sport.
Councillor Geoff Lowis, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "The scheme is a great opportunity for talented athletes from North East Lincolnshire to get some assistance towards the substantial costs of participating at the top level."
At present there are members of the scheme who compete in the sports of athletics, badminton, cricket, ice hockey, rowing, rugby and swimming.
Applications for new members to the scheme are now invited for 2005 and the deadline for applications to be received is July 1st.
