Sports Development - Press Releases

Sports Matters

The latest issue of North East Lincolnshire Council's sports development unit's bi-annual newsletter entitled Sports Matters has just been published.

The newsletter now includes the unit's coach education programme as well as articles promoting the work of the sports development unit.

The coach education programme promotes all courses organised for the Humber region. This programme consists of a wide range of sport specific and generic courses to encourage volunteers, coaches and teachers throughout North East Lincolnshire to gain qualifications to help promote and support opportunities within local sports clubs and schools.

Three people to benefit from the coach education programme are Andy Mundell, Steve Broderick and Adam Tear. They have been employed as casual sports coaches by the sports development unit to deliver a range of sport activities throughout North East Lincolnshire.

Through their employment they gained various coaching qualifications and are now all employed as PE teachers in schools in Grimsby and Immingham.

Adam Tear now works in the PE department at Immingham School. Before working for the sports development unit he gained a degree from Grimsby College. He believes that the coaching qualifications and the work experience gained through the unit have given him with invaluable knowledge of providing sports opportunities.

Andy Mundell believes the coach education brochure has been of great benefit in helping him develop skills in a range of sports. He said: "The wide range of courses on offer has increased my knowledge and ability to teach different sports. I would definitely recommend the coach education programme to anyone."

Councillor Geoff Lowis, portfolio holder for regeneration, believes that the coach education programme is vital for the continued development of sports opportunities available within North East Lincolnshire. He said: "By providing the range of courses within this area, we are encouraging individuals whether they are volunteers, coaches or teachers, to enhance their skills and knowledge which can be put back into the local community."

If you would like a copy of the latest sports matters newsletter contact Rebecca Wilson, assistant active communities officer, on 01472 323379. Alternatively copies are available from local libraries, leisure centres, schools and community and resource centres.
