The Stars Are Out for Scheme's Re-Launch

The Stars Are Out For Scheme's

Re-Launch

Some of North East Lincolnshire's most talented athletes are meeting tomorrow to re-launch the STAR scheme. The STAR scheme is a joint development initiative operated in partnership by the Sports Development Unit of North East Lincolnshire Council and Sport and Leisure Management (SLM), who operate the six main leisure facilities in North East Lincolnshire.

The scheme offers talented athletes limited free access to the facilities that SLM operate to assist in their training and development. In order to become a member of the STAR scheme athletes need to be competing at County level or above. Some of the athletes that are already enjoying the benefits of the STAR scheme are at an elite level in badminton, swimming, athletics and figure skating.

One STAR member is swimmer Andrew Gristwood who is the current British champion in one of the events he competes in. Other members include Jason Marshall, Anna Wilson, Craig Simpson and Ray Simpson who all represent the County in Badminton with some representing England internationally. 16 year old Emma Hicks represents the County in cross-country and is a member of Grimsby Harriers Athletics Club. She has just joined the scheme and receives free training sessions through the STAR scheme at King George V Stadium and Cleethorpes Leisure Centre.

Councillor Geoff Lowis, portfolio holder for Regeneration and Community Learning said: "This is a great scheme as it truly recognises local talent and provides valuable support to these athletes."

The six leisure facilities that are involved in the scheme are Grimsby Leisure Centre, Grimsby Swimming Pool, Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, King George V Stadium, Immingham Sports Centre and Immingham Swimming Pool. Membership to the scheme is still open to application and any athletes who feel that they may benefit from the training support that the STAR scheme offers should contact Mark Cullum at the Sports Development Unit on 01472 323434.
