It's never too late to learn! Perhaps you want to improve your basic English and Maths, get back into work, change careers, get a qualification, or maybe you just fancy an evening class? Here's some advice and useful links for adult learners and mature students.
Adult Education Classes
The Council runs a full programme of education courses, during the day and the evening, for adults. Courses include fun things like textiles, useful courses like basic computer skills, CLAIT and languages, vocational courses and also courses that lead to formal qualifications like City & Guilds diplomas. Basic Skills - Brush up your Maths and English
North East Lincolnshire Council's Adult Community Learning Service offers courses for people who would like to improve their basic maths and English skills. These courses are a good start for someone new to education and could help you get back into work. There are some women-only classes and many venues have crèche facilities. Open University
The Open University allows you to gain a certified degree, at home, at your own pace, by distance learning. Go to their website at http://www.open.ac.uk/ for a full list of courses and qualifications available.
Franklin College
Franklin College, who have a website at http://www.franklin.ac.uk, offer many courses including AS/A levels, AVCE, Intermediate Vocational Certificates of Education, GCSEs and Key Skills, plus evening classes and courses for adults who wish to return to education.
Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education
Formally known as Grimsby college, Grimsby Institute of Further & Heigher Education offer GCSE's, A-Levels, Modern Apprenticeships, NVQ's, GNVQ's, and courses right through to degree level. Mature students are always welcome. Go to their website at http://www.grimsby.ac.uk/ for a full prospectus.
New Deal
The new deal for young people is open to anyone aged 18-24 and could help you get training towards your career.
Modern Apprenticeships
If you are aged 16-24 and want to be paid while you learn, then a Modern Apprenticeship may be for you. You'll earn a proper wage and be able to work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), Key Skills qualification and, in most cases, a technical certificate such as a BTEC or City & Guilds.
